Founded in 1998, Girls Write Now is New York's first and only writing and mentoring organization for girls, and one of the nation's top after school programs, distinguished twice by the White House and the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

NBCUniversal awarded our Digital Media Mentoring Program its 21st Century Solutions grand prize for social innovation through technology. Our girls — over 90% high need and 95% girls of color — have performed at Lincoln Center and the United Nations, published original work in Newsweek, Elle India, AOL Cambio/Huffington Post, and our award-winning anthology. 100% of our seniors go on to college

From young women exploring writing to seasoned professionals practicing their craft every day, Girls Write Now is a community of women writers and digital media makers dedicated to providing the guidance, support, and opportunities for underserved high school girls to develop their creative, independent voices, and write their way to a better future.

ABOUT US

Our mentees are defining the digital age by bringing the craft of writing into the 21st century. In our Digital Media Mentoring Program, we boost girls’ tech savvy and creative potential through digital media. In bringing our curriculum and writing approach into the digital age, we prepare the girls we serve to truly be the next generation of writers—on whatever platform they choose.

Students are paired one-to-one with a digital media professional and together they transform their writing into digital art. All workshops are facilitated by graduate students at Parsons The New School for Design. Our workshops feature writing and digital skill-building exercises, prompts, and share-outs to diversify participants’ modes of self-expression. At the end of a program year, girls are equipped to tell a story in GIFs, a poem in HTML, and take their words to the next level.

Together we embark on a journey of creative workshops, public readings and showcases, opportunities for publication, and more, all to give girls the tools to advance their writing through different mediums.

Parsons The New School

Parsons School of Design has offered students innovative approaches to education since its founding in 1896. Today they're the only American art and design school within a comprehensive university, The New School. Their programs, offered through Parsons’ five schools, immerse students in focused training, interdisciplinary inquiry, and practice-based collaborative learning.

Students in the studio-based Design and Technology Graduate Program—offered in New York City and at the new Parsons Paris campus—investigate visual, interactive, and narrative aspects of design technology, with an emphasis on software programming and computation. The curriculum draws on history, politics, economics, psychology, ergonomics, and other disciplines. Typical projects involve games, Web and mobile apps, and video, film, and audiovisual performance.

Girls Write Now has partnered with Parsons School of Design since 2012. Throughout the program year, graduate students from the Design and Technology Program, help facilatate our monthly workshops and aid in teaching new digital skills to our mentees.

This program is made possible with leadership funding from the New York City Council STARS Citywide Girls Initiative, The Edmond de Rothschild Foundation, Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller Fund, News Corp, Winifred Johnson Clive Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
